Im Jahr 1964 stellte Pontiac den ersten GTO vor – und löste sogleich große Begeisterung aus. Für die Entwicklung des GTOs war John DeLorean federführend verantwortlich. Der Zusatz “GTO” steht für “Gran Tourismo Omologato” und bedeutet, wie schon beim Ferrari 250 GTO, dass er das Homologationsmodell in der Reihe der Pontiac-Rennwagen war. 1966 wurde der Pontiac GTO dann in eigenständiger Serie produziert und in drei Varianten angeboten: Zweitürer Fastback, Zweitürer Coupé und als Cabriolet. Der 389 V8 GTO Motor produzierte 360 PS und das Cabrio schaffte die Viertelmeile in 15,5 Sekunden. Der GTO war somit Mitte der 1960er der König unter den Muscle Cars und Pontiac verkaufte mehr Fahrzeuge als seine damaligen Mitstreiter. Dieser GTO wurde am 15. April 1966 an einen gewissen Mister Carnell in Maryland ausgeliefert. Das original Build Sheet für den Wagen ist bis heute vorhanden.

In 1964, Pontiac introduced the first GTO – and immediately sparked great enthusiasm. John DeLorean was primarily responsible for the GTO’s development. The „GTO“ designation stands for „Gran Turismo Omologato“ and, as with the Ferrari 250 GTO, signifies that it was the homologation model in Pontiac’s line of race cars. In 1966, the Pontiac GTO went into independent production and was offered in three versions: a two-door fastback, a two-door coupe, and a convertible. The 389 V8 GTO engine produced 360 hp, and the convertible could complete the quarter mile in 15.5 seconds. Thus, in the mid-1960s, the GTO reigned supreme among muscle cars, and Pontiac sold more vehicles than its competitors at the time. This particular GTO was delivered on April 15, 1966, to a Mr. Carnell in Maryland. The original build sheet for the car still exists today.
